Marion's Vineyard was discovered in 1979 as a, "jungle bush, blackberry-infested, rock heap" by a pair of wine prospectors who could find no indigenous product whilst traveling the apple isle at that time. "Too Cold here" oft stated, our homework affirmed most of the north Island was simply, " Too hot"! Locating the top posi, midway on the west bank of the Tamar River at Deviot, a much pondered, 15-minute decision was made. It was back to California to sell up and migrate to an exotic south pacific island to pioneer wine in a valley, a quarterback sneak up in the middle of the two greatest wine valleys in the world: France's Bordeaux and America's Napa. "Eureka! we have found it!". Clearing and planting in 1980, 1st vintage of 5.5 tonnes in 1983 had the pundits falling off fences. Tassie's 1st cellar door opened in July that year followed by the 1st, food, music events, weddings etc. "A celebration of the pioneer spirit and the joy that the wine provides was underway." 19 vintages on, the foundation is set, next generation the walls, following generation, the roof, then divest plunder and sell, as the story goes. |
